By Sarah Jane Udall
Graphic Design Training Review Columnist

An online degree in graphic design can be completed from the comfort of your own home or office, on your time, and at your pace.

A Life of Design

Earning a degree in graphic design can prepare you for career opportunities in a variety of fields such as graphic design, multi-media art and animation, computer game programming, web design, advertising, or commercial design.

A Graphic Design Program

A degree in graphic design will provide you with practical knowledge and skills, which, combined with your own artistic abilities, will allow you to create formal designs for the products we buy, things we see on the web, computer games we play, and more. A degree in graphic design will also provide you with the skills to work with a variety of graphic design mediums, including up to date computer-aided design software. You will learn how to use print and graphic technology, such as digital photography and computer design technology, in order to design and create graphic art. You will also learn how to develop lifelike images on a computer screen by using special computer programs, and devices to create and manipulate images.

Earning an Online Graphic Design Degree

Many accredited institutions offer the opportunity to earn a degree in graphic design online. This means you can attend class at your convenience, and study from the comfort of your own home or office. An online degree program is ideal if you are working, or have other commitments in your life that may keep you from being able to attend traditional, on-campus classes, or if you just prefer to have the flexibility to work when and where you want. By working toward your degree in graphic design online, you can control when and where you attend class, and often how long it will take you to complete your degree. And, just as in a traditional graphic design degree program, in an online degree program you will also be able to build a portfolio of your completed designs and modules that will help you to apply for jobs and maintain an edge in the graphic design industry.

Career Opportunities

Graphic designers usually specialize in a particular area of graphic design such as illustration, programming, logos or web design. An online degree in graphic design can prepare you for careers in such fields as advertising; as an art director or a designer, or in other multi-media fields such as computer game programming, web site design, animation and illustration, the visual arts, or as a logo specialist.
